What is Gzip compression really good for?

What Gzip compression level is recommended? Is it maybe 5?

And could someone please tell me exactly what Gzip compression is doing and what it is good for?

 

I have read that it speeds up the store a bit. Is that true?

A simple google search would answer this in a flash. Gzip compression decreases the size of the transfer by compressing it.

 

The best compression level to use will vary depending on your content and server. The best way to answer this question is to test at different levels. The levels range from 0-10:

 

0 no compression

1 low compression, low CPU usage

10 is high compression high CPU usage (comparatively)

 

In most cases, a lower compression level is better. Somewhere between 1 and 5.
