First Store feedback

First off here's the site:

Atelier Salon

and please read this whole post :)

I am very computer savvy, but web development was a whole new realm for me, so this is my first time using php, hosting, everything (junior in highschool doing this for my mom's business). In my opinion at this point progress seems to be going good :).

And here is my current list of "Stuff-to-Do":

-change boxes on left side to desired style

-remove default mini pictures (cartoon ones)

-modify some of the text colors

-change text headings ("Whats new here" etc.)

-add shipping modules

-add credit card module that allows to stay on my site

-remove all or all but 3 of the "new products" at bottom of main screen

-change button styles

-add SSL

-add the products from TIGI

Regarding SSL, since my current host (www.nearlyfreespeech.net) does not offer static IP address that would be required for SSL, I can't have it. I need to switch companies (although i DO recommend NFS for everything else....pay for only what you use site) and am right now looking at godaddy for hosting, domain transfer, and SSL certificate through them.

I would also like recommendations of other web hosting companies for this purpose!

So besides all of that, PLEASE critique my site with the utmost scrutiny. I mean everything :) any little nit picky thing you all can find (get the point? :P) Hows the design? Color Scheme? I am going for an earthy type scheme (somewhat similar to the Aveda site) that is easy on the eyes and looks good.

Please and THANKS!

Ross

i think you just covered it.....

your footer smight look better if not left grey, maybe you can match the header colour.

you list the usage for each product which i find a little odd, like 'massage onto wet hair, lather & rinse'.

lose the 'requests since...' in the footer, and the date.

the flash takes forever to load (for me), and it reloads on each page.

the green square at the top left doesn't line up with the image holding the store name.

you may want to consider allowing checkout without account.

ok, that's it from me.

Ross,

I'd like to see it once your todo list is complete, but my only other comment is that it is an interesting mix of large and small things. Mostly with the font size. Category names are the first thing you want your customers to focus on, not the more mundane website things like My Account, My Cart etc.

Your categories should be emphasized larger, and site navigation should be secondary.

Pete,

I am currently trying to adjust font sizes and types, but I am currently having some problems with it. I've enlarged the table, but the $categorybox function is making an outline of a box I do not want. Please check my site to see what I mean. thanks!

That link isnt working

Upon receiving fixes and advice, too many people don't bother to post updates informing the forum of how it went. Until of course they need help again on other issues and they come running back!

Why receive the information you require in good faith for free, only to then have the attitude to ignore the people who gave it to you?

There's no harm in saying, 'Thanks, it worked'. On the contrary, it creates a better atmosphere.

What host were you on? What host are you on now, Godaddy? I've used Godaddy's shared hosting packages and do not recommend them.

Reasons:

  • Slow
  • Inconsistent
  • Code isn't always executed

As I can see from your site, you've got the slow part covered. Also, when I clicked on a category it timed out and lost connection to your database.

I now use Godaddy's Virtual Dedicated Server, which runs about 30$ a month.

In relation to seeing that you have stated that you are a Junior in High School, I too was a Junior when I first attempted to use Oscommerce. (I am now a Senior)
