Shipping by Category

Is there a module (or known modification) available to make free shipping available for a particular category if a certain $ amount is reached for products in that category?

 

i.e. If I order $50 from category "example-1", I would receive free shipping on those items, but still would be charged normal shipping for items in other categories that I order at the same time.

 

 

I know there is a 'free shipping by category' module, but it really doesn't work. And it only does half of what I want to do (since mine is based on the dollar amount also).

 

Another solution, if such a module doesn't exist, is for me to make a custom modification. Where is free shipping checked? I have a moderate amount of experience with php, so I might be able to adjust the code to check on the categories of the items being ordered.....
