problem adding product attributes

I am just starting with osCommerce and have added a product. Now I want to add attributes to that product and have it display. I think I am adding them ok, however when I select insert, I get the following error:

1264 - Out of range value adjusted for column 'products_attributes_id' at row 1

 

I would appreciate any links to posts, articles etc to get this up and going. The store is a shoe store that will have different colors and sizes for lots of products so I really need to understand how to do this.
