knifeman Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 I know this is really vague, but I had a customer call today telling me there is no padlock on my checkout payment page. She is savvy enough to know about the lock, but she could not tell me which browser she was using. I felt like I was going to lose the sale if I pestered her too long for more info. I do have ssl and it shows up fine for me. I had her right click the page and properties shows the certificate. Does anybody have a suggestion as to why the lock was not showing for her? Is it the new iE browser? Surely there is not a setting to remove it? Thanks, Tim
Guest Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Hmm, my first guess if it is only one customer is that its a problem with her machine and not your site. If she is using IE v7 then the lock doesnt show up at the bottom of the page anymore, its show up at the top and to the right of the address bar. Pretty silly of microsoft to change this as most other browsers display it at the bottom still. I guess thats Misrosoft just trying to be different again. lol Hope this helps
Guest Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Also just though of this: Ask the customer to read out the address. If its https:// then i guess its secure. if its http:// then i guess its not.
abra123cadabra Posted November 21, 2006 Posted November 21, 2006 Also just though of this: Ask the customer to read out the address. If its https:// then i guess its secure. if its http:// then i guess its not. Nope. If you have secure and insecure items on the page, the URL is still https but it's not completely encrypted. Usually you can tell if a page is SSL protected by the coloured URL in the address field and/or the padlock showing at the bottom or quite recently right of the address field. abra The First Law of E-Commerce: If the user can't find the product, the user can't buy the product. knifeman Posted November 22, 2006 Author Posted November 22, 2006 Thanks everybody. I know the page is secure, just can't figure out why she could not see the lock. Could be IE&. As I said she was not real computer literate and I wasn't comfortable pressing her any longer for information. Tim
knifeman Posted December 7, 2006 Author Posted December 7, 2006 Hi, Still getting a couple of questions about why my lock is not showing up. I see it just fine using IE 6.0.2900.2180. Although my URL is not colored. (Can't recall seeing that anywhere) Latest customer says no lock at bottom or top of MicroSoft browser. He did say the URL begins with https though. Totally mystified why padlock is not showing up for some customers Login page Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Tim
abra123cadabra Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 Firefox 2.0 is fine and has coloured address bar and closed padlock at the bottom. IE 7 is fine too, has closed padlock right of address bar. abra The First Law of E-Commerce: If the user can't find the product, the user can't buy the product. knifeman Posted December 8, 2006 Author Posted December 8, 2006 Firefox 2.0 is fine and has coloured address bar and closed padlock at the bottom. IE 7 is fine too, has closed padlock right of address bar. abra Thanks for checking out the web page Abra! I see the color in firefox now. Never really use that one other than to check out how it looks when making changes. I know I have SSL, just can't figure out why some people do not see the lock. Tim
usernamenone Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 My guess is they are all getting secure pages. IE 7 moved theirs to the top and that is probably what is happening. They just don't know where to look.
ka0osk Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 :'( I have this problem in IE 6, and so do many customers --- but works fine in Firefox SSL No lock icon. The certs look fine in the properties under the file menu, just no lock icon. Address is https no problem there... anyone have any ideas or another thread I havent found on here about this? I am going through a proxy here but most sites work fine so I dont think thats it. Any ideas? ka0osk
usernamenone Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 then you have external links. http links leaving your site. This is known as unsafe for ssl's.
