Limit Purchase to only 1 of any specific product

After searching around to no avail, thought to ask if anyone knows of a way [or a contribution] to limit a person to purchase only one of a given product. This may sound odd but it would help in my particular situation.

Yes, mine too. One of my sites sells original paintings and giclee reproductions. You can see why I need to limit sales to "one per customer" on the originals.
