Taking credit card payments

I was reading on another forum that it is possible to process a credit card through your own terminal you may have. If the middle numbers of the card are sent to an email address, and the first and last four of the numbers are received in the orders section, is it legal to process it that way? I'm just not sure because of many different laws regarding online purchasing. Also, is it possible to get the CVV2 number also? I was reading online and heard that it is really "Illegal" to store these, unless they are in a secured database. If someone could please help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.
