jarb Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 'sorry for the previous blank postings, the oscommerce forums had packed in with too many SQL connections' Dear All, I would like the official line on the best type of host for osCommerce, i am new to this package hence will be asking pre-installation type newbie questions. I want to know what is the preference for hosting this package, is it LAMP or Win32, i am guessing the first option however would like confirmation before i waste my time on some kind of Windows install. Thanks jarb
SeanB Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 the linux hosting is what we're using, it's got everything we need. I've never used another host, so i cant compare to another. My website's address is in My Profile, since it's not allowed to be in my signature.
natewlew Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 The only reason to use Windows hosting would be because you need (want) to use there proprietary software like .asp etc.. Otherwise I would stick with Linux, BSD etc... I guess this is a matter of personal preference. The biggest diference between Windows and Linux is: Linux = FREE Windows = $$$$$$ Other great Open Source (Free) programs: (Free as in free speech not free beer) The Gimp - An image program. | Firefox - All you have to do is add the Web Developer add-on to make this web browser complete. | FileZilla - An ftp program. | Inkscape - A good program to create images with. | Thunderbird - An email program. | Openoffice.org - An office suite that is compatible with MS Office. | Abiword - Another office suite. | Audacity - A sound recording tool. | ddp's Picks | Wordpress - An easy to use blogging software. | Joomla - An easy to use CMS that has ecommerce plug-ins. | Drupal - Another CMS How do I find these programs? Google Search!
