FixThatiPod
Hi all, New to the forums, new to osCommerce, pretty much new to the whole online website thing. So, I have a few questions. First, how do I set up the password protection for the "admin" folder? I got as far as blocking it with .htaccess, but i could never get usernames to be recognized. Second, how do you remove the default "What's New Here?" and "Let's See What We Have Here" headers from the store? How do you list individual products on the home page of the store without having to go through the categories? Finally, what should I do to make the store more attractive to potential customers? I'd show the store, but I'm too embarrassed  By the way, I'm using Go Daddy's Linux hosting, if it matters. Thanks.
Jack_mcs
For password protection, there is an option in your hosts control panel. See the english/index.php file to remove that text. Hard code them. Install a template or edit the appearance yourself (the latter takes more time and experience but you get better results). Just so you are aware of it, you will normally get better and more responses if you limit your question to one subject. Jack It could be that .htaccess and .htpasswd slows down the shared servers on linux servers. In windows server, protecting a folder is just a click automated on control panel of server. Maybe the ISP doesn't want to many websites using .htaccess to protect their folders. Godaddy instructions don't work for some reason and oscommerce doesn't secure the admin for some reason. I mean what the point of ecommerce if you can't secure even the admin where all the information of customers etc. are located. Even for fun it's good to test real software. :D
Wendy James
Password protecting: Either use your webhosts "password protect directory link" or instal one of the many contributions. For the "Lets see..." stuff you have many options. I do not suggest hard coding them in because that will not work for all pages since product page and index is used for several things. I normally suggest http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,207 which changes the page headings and adds meta tags or smaller contributions such as http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,3801 http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,1908 There are some others if you search for page heading or meta tags... some of the meta tag contributions do multible things. As for changing the look there are a whole bunch of contributions you could check out depending on how into it you want to get. Some that are css based basic stuff, some that edit the boxes, some that let you edit each box individually... and there are two template systems BTS and STS but (and this is my own personal experience) they can be tricky to work with when you want to add contributions and (I find) it's easier to just get an editer and edit the pages myself.
