How did you hear about us required in signup

how would i go about adding a how did you here about us text box in the sign up section and make it required?

First you would have to add column to the customers table like referrals. Then you would have to add a field to the form in create_account.php and add an input for it to be inserted into the database. Then you would have to edit the customers.php in the admin to show the data. I know this is vague but this is what is required.

You can use google-analytics. Its pretty detailed statistics.
