shared and dedicated ssl setup and explanation

I know I'm still rather new to oscommerce but something just doesn't make scence to me. Since all ecommerce sites require "SSL" either shared or dedicated, for their prospective clients protection of sensitive information, my question is why is there not any detailed information on oscommerce's site to explain to the first time builders of why, which one and how to set up ssl on either a home server or hosted server? After the months of posting my questions and sorting through others, I've noticed about 50% of all questions in this particular forum concern "SSL" In one shape or form. I was lucky enough to have a neighbor to explain the major differences and give some suggestions but if it weren't for that I would still be pretty lost for the most part. Maybe there is this type of documentation somewhere and I've just missed it but if it does exist then I believe it's approprate place would be in the knowledge base or under the quick install created by Vger or even both couldn't hurt. I guess this is as much as a question as it is a request. I know I would like to see this even though I now have a very basic working idea of how this all works.

Thanks for your time, :-"

Vger, the installation guide is awesome!

quick answer:

shared: using the host's certificate - usually free - just set the correct config

dedicated: the certificate is in your domain name - starts at about $20/yr - your host may be able to set this up for free or a small fee - easy

I suggest that you get a dedicated cert, that way you have the control
