How do I set "whats new" products?

How do I specify which products get shown in the "What's New" box? I have a pre-built template with the What's New box in the left hand column, and it's showing several products that don't seem to exist. The whats_new.php code seems to select records based on "products_status = '1'".

How do I set that status? I don't see it in the admin panel.
