Charset configuration error

I recently imported a Mysql database from an osCommerce intallation to another on a different server. Everything went fine with the exception of acute and swung-dash characters (as used in the spanish language) which appear with odd characters (ampersands, copyright symbols and the like).

 

I've tried changing the charset on each and every table from latin1_swedish_ci (original enconding) to utf8_ spanish_ci and to uft8 but this produces an error in the osCommerce installation.

 

Any ideas as to how can I fix this?
