Order the products on the new products page?

Hello Everyone,

When you first get to my store (index.php), it shows the "New products for October". Is there some way to put them in a different order than when they were added to the database? I'm quite new at OSC and searched the forum, so I apologize if this newbie question has been asked before.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

In your /catalog/includes/modules/new_products.php find:

  if ( (!isset($new_products_category_id)) || ($new_products_category_id == '0') ) {
$new_products_query = tep_db_query("select p.products_id, p.products_image, p.products_tax_class_id, if(s.status, s.specials_new_products_price, p.products_price) as products_price from " . TABLE_PRODUCTS . " p left join " . TABLE_SPECIALS . " s on p.products_id = s.products_id where products_status = '1' order by p.products_date_added desc limit " . MAX_DISPLAY_NEW_PRODUCTS);
 } else {
$new_products_query = tep_db_query("select distinct p.products_id, p.products_image, p.products_tax_class_id, if(s.status, s.specials_new_products_price, p.products_price) as products_price from " . TABLE_PRODUCTS . " p left join " . TABLE_SPECIALS . " s on p.products_id = s.products_id, " . TABLE_PRODUCTS_TO_CATEGORIES . " p2c, " . TABLE_CATEGORIES . " c where p.products_id = p2c.products_id and p2c.categories_id = c.categories_id and c.parent_id = '" . (int)$new_products_category_id . "' and p.products_status = '1' order by p.products_date_added desc limit " . MAX_DISPLAY_NEW_PRODUCTS);
 }

and replace with this for random order:

  if ( (!isset($new_products_category_id)) || ($new_products_category_id == '0') ) {
$new_products_query = tep_db_query("select p.products_id, p.products_image, p.products_tax_class_id, if(s.status, s.specials_new_products_price, p.products_price) as products_price from " . TABLE_PRODUCTS . " p left join " . TABLE_SPECIALS . " s on p.products_id = s.products_id where products_status = '1' order by rand() limit " . MAX_DISPLAY_NEW_PRODUCTS);
 } else {
$new_products_query = tep_db_query("select distinct p.products_id, p.products_image, p.products_tax_class_id, if(s.status, s.specials_new_products_price, p.products_price) as products_price from " . TABLE_PRODUCTS . " p left join " . TABLE_SPECIALS . " s on p.products_id = s.products_id, " . TABLE_PRODUCTS_TO_CATEGORIES . " p2c, " . TABLE_CATEGORIES . " c where p.products_id = p2c.products_id and p2c.categories_id = c.categories_id and c.parent_id = '" . (int)$new_products_category_id . "' and p.products_status = '1' order by rand() limit " . MAX_DISPLAY_NEW_PRODUCTS);
 }

Hi Abra,

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping to be able to sort the products the way I wanted to but I guess the only way to do that is to delete them and add them in the way I want them to show up :( Thanks for showing me where the code is though.

On another note, is there another page that can be displayed here that I can have more control over?

Thanks again,

Doug

I would guess a featured products contribution instead of the new products this month module might be what you are looking for.

Thanks again Abra. I will go looking for that in the contributions. Do you know if the documentation for that contribution tells how to have it included in the index.php page?

I'm using a modified version of the new products for this month module so I have no experience with the featured products contributions. But from all the contribs I already added to my shop, there was always an instruction document in the contrib zip file. If you experience any problems with a contribution, there is a special contribution support forum where almost every contribution has it's own support thread.
