Does osCommerce but a lot of strain on database servers?

I have had lots of problems with a hosting company that I use for lots of oscommerce sites. The company I use is a UK based one called 1&1.

Basically some sites on their servers have started to run very very slowly - due to their busy database servers.

I wrote them a letter stating I wasn't happy with their service, and they replied with the letter below. Basically stating that MY site was slowing down the ENTIRE database server, and was putting an 'unacceptable load' on the server.

The site is pretty much bog standard osc, with a new template and stuff. But currently can take up to 2 minutes to load the page.

So whats the deal? Are they just fobbing me off? They appear to be stating that oscommerce can not run on their shared servers. Which is simply not true.

It has come to our attention that your account database;

{db acct no here}

has been flagged up by the administrators for taking up too many

resources on the database server.

Please note that being on a shared hosting platform the database server

resources are shared amongst other users. There has been a performance drop on the server

due to the resources that are been taken up by your database.

Please review the database scripts and make them more efficient.

Another possibility made available is to migrate the WebSpace to a managed or dedicated server.

You would have full resources of the machine and do not effect other users.

We would also like to bring your attention to the T&C's that are in

place:

Others on the forums have stated problems with 1&1. I have not had any experience with them so I can't say. They are probably being truthful in what they are saying but the problem is that their limits are set too low for your site to run without problems. There is a thread about optimizing an oscommerce shop but you should not have to do that for a basic shop. And you shouldn't have to pay extra for a dedicated server to get your site to run. If you move to a host that can handle oscommerce, you won't have that problem. I think that is your only real choice.
