Can an attribute have attributes?

I just installed Attributes Sets Plus contribution. However... I'm not sure how to proceed for what I want.

 

I'm setting up a shop to sell designs on t-shirts. I have several designs, all of which will be available on several kinds of shirts (ringer T, short sleeve T, long sleeve T, etc.). I'd like to have the shopper see the designs, click on a design to see what shirts it's available on, select the shirt, then choose the color and size and quantity, and then go pay.

 

To achieve that, should I set up the shop so that each design is the "product" and the shirt is an attribute of the design? But then... each shirt will still have its own attributes (color, size) that the shopper must choose... :huh:

 

So... Can an attribute have attributes??

 

(I'm trying to avoid having my products be "design+shirt" combos, 'cause that would be really burdensome, as ALL the designs will be available on ALL of the shirt types... and as we add more designs and shirt types... well, that would exponentially suck. Help!)
