Please Help with upgrade

I run OScommerce on http://www.modulardepot.com

 

It was installed a long time ago and I've done a few things here and there to change it. Well, I really need to get it up to date, I really haven't done any updates since then. I'm really not sure how to know the exact version I'm on.

 

What is the best way to proceed from here?

 

Would I be able to backup the database, install a fresh up to date version and import the old database?

 

I figured it would be best to ask before trying anything. I'd like the store to be down as little as possible.
