That's definitely a good idea - would be willing to help with this effort.

ABF is another carrier that provides XML on their site to obtain real time quotes.

******Looks like this topic has died. No luck on a contibution?*****

I'd like to bring it up again with the following ideas.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#1- Skip the shipping and payment modules all together.

List our heavy products using the standard OSC configuration, but...

1) Classify Items that require a shipping quotation (ie- tax class?)

2) Make it maditory that those items can only be processed through a "Request for Quote" - COD style payment without processing a payment.

3) Add a option on the shipping selection for a "Request for Quote" so that shipping charges are not applied. The customer info is recorded.

4)Then contact the customer via email with the final rates and quote. Oscomerce would only function as a catalog.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#2- Create shipping modules for freight carriers

FedEx freight, Roadway, Yellow, etc. all have online quotations for registered customers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This would be an ideal contribution for large product stores.

I'm new to oscommerce, and I really wouldnt want to screw up this kind of contribution. I'd be willing to take a stab at it is someone could point me in the right direction. Again, this is the voice of ignorance trying to think outside the box. Let me know if I'm being unrealistic.

Thanks!

Badjuju,

I was going to try the quote method first. Exact freight quotes would be ideal, but it appears it would be a complicated project.

Freight costs factor in not only the weight of the product, but also the freight classification, and sometimes the crate dimensions. This data needs to be attributed to each applicable product.

The store needs to store the info pertaining to their account, applicable freight discounts, residential pickup, and crating and handling fees.

We would also need to collect additional data from the customers such as, do they require a lift gate, and is it a residential delivery or limited access delivery.

Then we would need to connect this data with each individual freight company. We would need a module for each. I was hoping I could model it off the UPS or USPS modules, but I haven?t taken the time to look into it yet.

I?ll be busy for the next few weeks until finals are through. (I?m a full time student) I?d love to hear your thoughts on the subject though. Do you have any experience with shipping modules?
