Step 1 - error:Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

I am running mysql 5.0 and have created a database and user with the admin tool and granted that user full access with password to that database.

 

How do I get around this ? I am running IIS 6.0 and mysql 5.0, php 4.4 I believe (all are new from websites today). I found a post with a person in the same issue, but nothing became of the replies.

 

 

 

upon trying to add the database I get the error:

 

A test connection made to the database was NOT successful.

 

The error message returned is:

 

Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client
