dollyblue
1.is it free to use the source on OSC ? YES - incredible as it may seem! 2.do we need to pay for OSC every year for using the source ? No, it really is free. 3.where can i start with if want to build a site ? http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/downloads Make sure your server meets the spec required for the prgramme. Have a look at the default site to see what you get. If you think it looks horrible and are disappointed, you aren't looking hard enough. When I embarked on my OS Commerce adventure I only knew a tiny amount of html and had never heard of php. I got someone else to upload the default site for me and they handed it to me without any documentation and said 'off you go'. I think this approach is known as the 'long wait' where an apprentice on his first day is sent off to the store to ask for a long wait..... 4.is professional skill &knowledge in web building need here ? Depends how great you want your site to look and your skill level. Start by reading the Knowledge Base http://www.oscommerce.info/ and the documentation that comes with the download. After a while you might find yourself reading the forums in the dead of night for fun! Good Luck Gloria

You will also need to download something like xamp or easyphp for working on your computer. These are also free! ( EasyPHP comes complete with MySQL, PHPMyAdmin and basically is a one click install) Also you should get some kind of html editor ( one with php support preferably ). Not sure of any free ones but I'm sure there are at least free trials. I use dreamweaver. One last thing would be an FTP program. Several free ones on the web but also many hosts have them included in the control panel. Then learn to backup everything on a weekly basis. If something goes wrong with any of the modifications that you make you can always resort back to the backed up data. You should also back up everything before you make changes just as a safeguard and keep a copy of your orginal files in a safe place on your hard drive.
