Catalog Layout

I'm a total newbie and I want to thank everyone in advance for their help.

 

My question is it possible to have different layouts for different categories. I have one that has over 500 products that are just different in look. I'd like them to be able to be lined up in rows and columns, while with the other products i more want them to go one after another in one big column.
