Images do not show up anymore, Reinstalled database from backup

Hi, I had to reinstall my database from a recent backup and that worked fine. The problem is that all my images no longer show up. They are in the image directory but for some reason they don't show up on my site. Does any one know why this is happening and what I should do to prevent this from happening again in the future? I have thousands of product and I would prefer not to have to upload them all again.
