Dennis_gull Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Hello, I have seen a dozen of posts about how important SSL is and I have been trying to find out why. But I dont really get what SSL is. Can someone explain in an easy way what SSL does thats so important when you have a shop. And also if I use SSL on my site will it require anything?
Jack_mcs Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Due to the way the Internet works, information entered into your shop might get sent to several servers before finally reaching yours. Anyone on one of those servers can see that information and take it. With ssl, the data is encrypted. That makes it so that not just anyone can view it. Think of it as if I asked you for your home address, phone number and credit card number and you posted them here for all to see. You might find some charges on your credit card bill next month. But if you encrypted your reply so that only I could understand it, there wouldn't be any problems. Considering that a solid ssl certificate costs $20/year from godaddy, there is simply no reason for a shop not to have one, in my opinion.
