Guest Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 There's a new file in my root folder called 'google86ea07464d2557b0.html' The file is empty. But...how did it get there?
Jack_mcs Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 It's a google sitemap file. Someone who has access to your google sitemap account would have had to create and upload it. Guest Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 I've never created a sitemap. I do send feeds to Froogle/Googlebase on a regular basis. Should I change my username and password?

Jack_mcs Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 I've never created a sitemap. I do send feeds to Froogle/Googlebase on a regular basis. Should I change my username and password? Do you have a google sitemaps account? If so, go there and see if your site is listed. Also check to see if one of the google sitemap contributions is installed. It would not serve anyone any purpose, that I can think of, to break into your site and upload such a file since they could not get anything from it. Terra Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 There's a new file in my root folder called 'google86ea07464d2557b0.html' This file is part of the Google verification system and it would have been created by somebody who has access to both your site via FTP and your Google account. Now, hackers are very unlikely to kindly help you with your site and Google, so I'd hazard a guess that somebody involved in the site did this. The file allows Google to verify that whoever created the Google account is in fact the site owner. It's usually part of the Google sitemap verification (although you don't necessarily have to have a sitemap for this file to exist). If you have any doubts, you need to change both your Google and FTP account access details. If files are being added to your site and you don't know why, you should find out the reason. Installing the sitemonitor contribution will help determine when it happens and maybe find the reason.
