Chris Smith Posted October 24, 2006 Author Posted October 24, 2006 How do you get a listing on DMOZ? the suggest a site keeps going 404 and I heard the only way is to bribe an editor, is this true? Also I heard that this is the PageRank algorithm PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn)) I know that the algorithm is a secret so I am doubtful but who knows.
jpweber Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 To get a site listed in DMOZ, simply go to DMOZ.org. It's a very well-respected, free backlink directory -- well respected by Google, especially. But it does take months -- I mean, 2-6 MONTHS, for you to get listed. Follow their instructions on how to submit a URL carefully, and don't bend any of their rules. You do NOT have to become an editor to get listed on DMOZ. And if you're going to submit your website, do NOT apply to become an editor, 'cause you'll just get denied once you tell 'em. And if you don't tell 'em, and they find out, your site will be banned. Go ahead and list with DMOZ, and list with as many other free backlinks as you can. DMOZ will take months, but others only take a couple of days. Follow the advice others have given re: header tags, content, etc. .... And most of all, be patient. Google takes longer than other search engines to get natural results. I know it can take 2-10 months to get natural results in Google. Should I go to a SEO company or do you guys/girls think that its possible for someone who has no knowedge whatsoever of SEO to fix their own rankings. Help and advice needed Chris  Don't get hung up on Page Rank. It has little effect overall. What you want to concentrate on is getting a good index position. That is the place you show up at in the search engine listings. You do that by installing the contributions mentioned above as well as others meant for this purpose (there are about ten). You also have to target keywords for your home page. Without doing that, you will not place as you want. You can make all of the SEO changes yourself. The contributions needed are mentioned in the forums many times so you shouldn't have a problem getting them in. But the other things, like picking keywords will take some work on your part. If you do hire an SEO company, be sure they have intimiate knowledge of oscommerce. If not, they will not set the shop of properly and the money you pay would be a waste. Also be sure that they target good keywords. Many of those compaines guarantee a top ten spot in the listings and then target keywords that won't help you. They fulfill their promise but it doesn't help your site at all. As for DMoz, depending upon the category you list in, it may take years to get listed. It is a good idea to list there but I wouldn't place all of my hopes on it due to the length of time it can take. Guest Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Re Google Adwords. You need to use the correct & relevant adwords for best results. Try around with changing adwords once a week trying new ones, different ones, those in plural, sentences, etc. and, dont be afraid to delete some (even if they have hits) if you havent received any orders.
jpweber Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 You're just stuck in The Google Sandbox. Continue to add relevant content to your site, and wait the necessary 3-5 months to get out of "Google Probation". Then watch you site (and Page Rank, which as Jack says, is of little importance) climb.
