500 Internal Server Error

I'm trying to set up the osCommerce shopping cart for my web site. After uploading the 'catalog' directory as instructed in the manual, I then tried to visit http://www.mywebsite.com/catalog/install/ to continue with the installation per the instructions provided, but I keep getting a 500 Internal Server Error. The exact error message is this:

The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.

The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.

 

I re-uploaded a couple times making sure to upload as text instead of binary, but still the same result. I also checked with the hosting company and they assured me that there should be no issues on their end.
