Guest Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 I am looking at setting up an online business selling various food stuffs can i resell products purchased from a supermarket or do i have to go to a cash and carry/wholesaler? are there any legal restrictions for either? Many Thanks
Guest Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 Normally in todays world, you can sell anything, in your case though, I would expect that you would first need to contact the Department of Health and Saftey as you would need a license to sell food, just like any supermarket or takeaway food premises have to. You may also need to obtain permissions from the manufacturs of the products as some companies only have authorised distributers.

Thanks for the quick response It would only be pre packaged foods such as baked beans etc nothing fresh - i've seen people doing it on ebay for example i just wasn't sure if it was legal
Guest Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 I would hate to say, my wife tried to bake and sell cakes on eBay and we were contacted by the food and hygiene board, we were told to stop selling, as we had not got an approved kitchen, everything had to be stainless steel. Now you differ here, as you are not making the products but selling already sealed containers, so unsure exactly where the law applies to this. The best bet would to phone the Health and Safety department and get the info from them, rather than guessing. Stuart
GemRock Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 This forum would not be the best place to find answers to this kind of questions. You'd better consult the relevant departments or check out their websites for info. A good starting point would be your local trading standard office.
