Images Directory - 777, 766 or 755

Hello Everyone,

Ive had some trouble with my installation, images directory was set to 777 and somebody hacked it. All has now been sorted and I have set the images directory to 755 as advised but now when I go to admin and add a new product with an image I get the warning message at the top which says the images directory is not writable.

I know it shouldnt be 777 for obvious reasons, 766 means none of the images display at all anywhere on the site and 755 wont let admin upload the images.

What am I doing wrong perhaps I need to change something in the config or something. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to make it run smoothly with 755 or 766 permissions.

ours all work perfectly well set to 757

Will this cause any security problems with the public being able to write and execute
