Timeout error after checkout_confirmation.php but i only have 3 products

I'm getting the following code after i click confim on the checkout_confirmation.php:

I'm currently tearing my hair out over this and can't quite work out what it's doing wrong, interestingly enough, when i click refresh on this page it goes through (although it does take about a minute to process), obviously i can't expect customers to do this though.

 

I've read a couple of other posts on these forums saying that their database is timing out with similar errors but that seems to be when you have several thousand products, i have 3. Each product has an attribute that has about 100 options but the processing up until checkout_confirmation.php page is nice and quick.

 

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated

bump, still need help.

 

I'm suspecting it's to do with the smtp file, but i'm still not sure how to fix or replace it.
