How to protect to this part of the directory?

Hi there,

 

I've noticed in my Awstats, that my /catalog/images/ is wide open.

 

I've tried creating a blank index.php but I get 500 error.

 

I've tried variations in .htaccess to redirect /catalog/images/ inquiries to somewhere else and of course that messes with my images.

 

How can I "close" the path so someone can not get to my images listings?

I think I posted in there too about hot link protection. I've not used it myself yet so my knowledge on the topic is limited. Maybe check out the forums at www.htaccesstools.com ... I think there were a few people asking about hot link protection there. :)
