aidanodr Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Hi Guys, I am slowly doing up an OSC site for a client, but as I go I realise it may not fulfill the needs of this client. The person I am doing this for wants some control themselves - that is - to add / delete their own products, change colors and add pages etc. This person has limited / no knowledge in this regard. I am not sure whether OSC is good for this. It seems to be for a reasonably tech savy person who wishes to set up their own shop. That is, knowledge of CSS and HTML would be necessary to do this. Am I right or wrong? I am not too worried about the time I am spending at it as it is a learning thing for me also that will come in useful, but I do not want to lead the client down this road if in actual fact they would be better off with a simple full hosted solution like: http://www.valueweb.com/web-hosting/ecommerce-hosting.htm Appreciate ye're thoughts on this, Cheers Aidan
Jack_mcs Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Some parts, like adding products is very easy. Other parts, like changing the look can be quite difficult. It can all be learned but it can take considerable effort, depending upon what you want to do. An alternative is to purchase a template. I'm not a big fan of them but they are a nice way to get the look you want quickly. They cost more than just using the basic code but would be much cheaper than the other option you mentioned. Take the tour of their ecommerce pro solution, and you will see that it is, in fact, oscommerce, fitted with a template. You're still going to have to pay extra for any significant developement or modifications they have to do for you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: As of Oct 2006, I'm not as active in this forum as I used to be, but I still work with osC quite a bit. If you have a question about any of my posts here, your best bet is to contact me though either Email or PM in my profile, and I'll be happy to help.
