Guest Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 Have just recently started my first OS store and would like some helpful feedback. http://www.thecoolingemporium.co.uk/catalog/ Thanks Chris
Andrew Yuen Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Hi Chris, The main content of the site is still stock osCommerce. As for the header design, I like the header logo. Some suggestions, remove the -> and product count from the categories infobox. I would remove the languages box if you are going to offer only English. Also the icons need to be changed from something other then default osCommerce. I also suggest adding SSL. Andrew Yuen osCommerce, Community Team
abra123cadabra Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Sorry to say that, but yes, it's not only stock but there is nothing matching on your site. There are the cartoon icons, your header logo and the default colour scheme. It all looks like it's done rather quickly without paying attention to details like spelling, font sizes and images etc. More than that, there is no physical business address or phone number. You need the customers TRUST. SSL adds to that and is quickly installed and not too expensive. Invest some time in proper product photos. abra The First Law of E-Commerce: If the user can't find the product, the user can't buy the product. Feedback and suggestions on my shop welcome. Note: My advice is based on my own experience or on something I read in these forums. No guarantee it'll work for you! Make sure that you always BACKUP the database and the files you are going to change so that you can rollback to a working version if things go wrong.

abra123cadabra Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 There are different SSL certificates on the market. I took an offer from my webhost. They ordered and installed it (you need access to the server root directories) for me. I got a certificate for https://www.mydomain.com, my normal domain is http://www.mydomain.com. Like this I only needed to change some settings in the config files for osC plus some code changes where I used absolute references in my own modifications. No need to copy files into the SSL directory etc. Best work together with your webhost. abra The First Law of E-Commerce: If the user can't find the product, the user can't buy the product.
