Permissions for File Manager

I am providing a few shopping carts to different users with different sites. I need to give them access to edit their own php files. If I use the File Manager in the Admin Tools console, it get an error:

 

"Error: I can not write to this file. Please set the right user permissions on: /var/oscommerce/catalog//account.php"

 

What should the permissions be?

 

Also, in reading other posts, it seems that many users feel the File Manger is not very useful. I just need something down and dirty to edit the files - will this do the trick?

 

If not, do you reccomend another solution?
