NEW Install shopping cart loses contents

Ok, I've just finished a clean install of osc V2.2

the ONLY contrib added so far is the STS4 + Header tags.

when I log in as a test customer, I can see my personal info.

I add product to my cart, then hit the checkout button.

 

it switches to https: and displays 'your shopping cart is empty.'

 

the shopping cart box at the top right side displays '0 items'

but if I click on the arrow (in my empty cart), the next page shows my stuff in the cart.

If I click on 'checkout' again.... 'your shopping cart is empty'

Can anyone please help firgure this out?
