PayPal not processing orders - customers getting hung in space

For the past few months, random orders have gotten 'stuck' in Preparing via PayPal but payments have completed so I have just manually changed status. Annoying but not intolerable...

 

For the past four days, several (somewhat irate) customers have complained that PayPal is timing out and they can't complete their payment. Of course, this does not stop them from resubmitting their order 6 or 7 times.

 

I placed an order and everything processed fine except for the status update so I can't even duplicate their problem. I did notice PayPal's payment window looks quite different from when I opened the store in February.

 

Is anyone else having either of these problems and has anyone discovered a mystical solution?
