Home page catagory images

Hi all,

 

I am in the middle of setting up a OSC site for our company and would to change the catalog or home page.

 

What I would like is to have a selection of smallish images across the home or catalog page where each image represents one of the main catagories.

Something like the 'New products' at the bottome of the catalog page with a new install.

 

So, basically the customers would be shown a a page of images for the catagories and the catagory list on the left hand side.

 

I am not sure if I have explained that very well.

 

Also where do I change the 'Whats new for october' section on the botttom of the catalog page. Where do I controll the products etc that are list there?
