Resizing images by percent of size

Hi:

 

I have a site with images in all formats: vertical and horizontal and the "one size fits all" solution in the admin panel for small image size doesn't get the job done. I am wondering if anyone has a mod that allows the small image to be a percent of the images size rather than using the height and width settings by pixel.

 

Or, if someone has a way to deal with this, I'd appreciate it.

 

Worse case scenario is I'd have to edit all the photos and put them on a standard image canvas size. Yuk.
