ImagineThat Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I have the following message displayed at the top of my catalogue page: Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home2/******/public_html/store/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file. I have tried to adjust the user permissions to rectify the problem, but any time I change the permissions to anything but 777, I then get a 404 or 403 error message on the catalogue page and can't access the catalogue at all. What am I doing wrong???
Guest Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 The permissions should be 644, or 444 if the former is not allowed on your host. If you're able to set the permissions successfully but then get the 404 or 403 error then the NEW error is likely not coming from a permissions issue on your configure.php file, but rather something else.

Guest Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 ... so where do I start looking to figure out where these 404/403 errors are coming from??? I am sooooooo lost... If you haven't already, I'd suggest going over the install notes again (see the documentation that comes with osCommerce) particularly page 9, which talks about the permissions on all folders. The problem could be either with incorrect configuration details in your catalog/includes/configure.php or admin/includes/configure.php, or with permissions being too strict on some folders.
ImagineThat Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 I have gone into the File Manager to try to change the permissions as indicated on pg 9 of the install manual to alleviate my error message, but cannot see where the permissions are in the HTML code sections when I click on "edit". Am I in the wrong area??
Druid6900 Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 I have gone into the File Manager to try to change the permissions as indicated on pg 9 of the install manual to alleviate my error message, but cannot see where the permissions are in the HTML code sections when I click on "edit". Am I in the wrong area?? Ummm, it sounds like you may be trying to use the File Manager in the Admin panel tools section, I'm not sure, however, I believe they want you to use the File Manager that most ISPs supply with the hosting. You may be doing this. Again, I don't know. If you ARE using the File Manager at your ISP, there is usually a number of buttons in the top right hand corner (if you are using CPanel or something similar) and one of them probably says CHMOD. To use it, check the box on the line that contains the file (or directory) you want to change the permission for and then click on CHMOD. This will give you a new screen that will allow you to enter the permission level (usually in numbers). In most cases, you just want to change that particular file or, in the case of a directory, just the directory and not all the files in it, so, watch for this and don't end up changing the permission on all the files and sub-directories. Hope this helps a bit Richard No Good Deed EVER Goes Unpunished
ImagineThat Posted November 24, 2006 Author Posted November 24, 2006 OK I am almost there!!!! Whew!! the only two things that are left that I don't know how to fix are these: I have this message at the very bottom of my main catalogue page: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ',' in /home2/singing/public_html/store/includes/application_bottom.php on line 20 and a TEXT_MAIN near the top of the main page, under the "Welcome Guest" line. I am not all that familiar with HTML, so I don't want to delete anything else without very specific instructions....
Druid6900 Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 OK I am almost there!!!! Whew!! the only two things that are left that I don't know how to fix are these: I have this message at the very bottom of my main catalogue page: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ',' in /home2/singing/public_html/store/includes/application_bottom.php on line 20 and a TEXT_MAIN near the top of the main page, under the "Welcome Guest" line. I am not all that familiar with HTML, so I don't want to delete anything else without very specific instructions.... If you can post your application_bottom.php file here, that would help a great deal. As for the TEXT_MAIN, on your homepage, that's not an error, it's an explanation of how you go about replacing the default text on that page with the text you want. It tells you what module to change the text in and 2 ways of going about it. No Good Deed EVER Goes Unpunished

The code for the application_top isn't necessary because the TEXT_MAIN is in catalog/includes/languages/english, but, unless you deleted the explanation for how you edit the TEXT_MAIN content, it'd be overwritten when you change the default text to what you want the home page to display. Druid6900 Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Ok, as for the TEXT_MAIN tag hanging out there on your site, here is some of the original code. Highlight the TEXT_MAIN in your catalog/includes/languages/english/index.php file and replace it with this; define('TEXT_MAIN', ' ' Then add whatever text you want to show up on your main page between the two ' signs after the comma. You can put pretty much anything you want, including HTML text attribute codes here and it will show up on your main store page. If you don't want any text, this will hide the tag and still leave it open if you want to add text at a later date. Richard No Good Deed EVER Goes Unpunished
ImagineThat Posted November 25, 2006 Author Posted November 25, 2006 Hmmm, sounded easy enough, but I don't think I have a TEXT_MAIN.... here is what I have: <?php /* $Id: index.php,v 1.1 2003/06/11 17:38:00 hpdl Exp $ osCommerce, Open Source E-Commerce Solutions http://www.oscommerce.com Copyright © 2003 osCommerce Released under the GNU General Public License */ define('TABLE_HEADING_NEW_PRODUCTS', 'New Products For %s'); define('TABLE_HEADING_UPCOMING_PRODUCTS', 'Upcoming Products'); define('TABLE_HEADING_DATE_EXPECTED', 'Date Expected'); if ( ($category_depth == 'products') || (isset($HTTP_GET_VARS['manufacturers_id'])) ) { define('HEADING_TITLE', 'Let\'s See What We Have Here'); define('TABLE_HEADING_IMAGE', ''); define('TABLE_HEADING_MODEL', 'Model'); define('TABLE_HEADING_PRODUCTS', 'Product Name'); define('TABLE_HEADING_MANUFACTURER', 'Manufacturer'); define('TABLE_HEADING_QUANTITY', 'Quantity'); define('TABLE_HEADING_PRICE', 'Price'); define('TABLE_HEADING_WEIGHT', 'Weight'); define('TABLE_HEADING_BUY_NOW', 'Buy Now'); define('TEXT_NO_PRODUCTS', 'There are no products to list in this category.'); define('TEXT_NO_PRODUCTS2', 'There is no product available from this manufacturer.'); define('TEXT_NUMBER_OF_PRODUCTS', 'Number of Products: '); define('TEXT_SHOW', '<b>Show:</b>'); define('TEXT_BUY', 'Buy 1 \''); define('TEXT_NOW', '\' now'); define('TEXT_ALL_CATEGORIES', 'All Categories'); define('TEXT_ALL_MANUFACTURERS', 'All Manufacturers'); } elseif ($category_depth == 'top') { define('HEADING_TITLE', 'What\'s New Here?'); } elseif ($category_depth == 'nested') { define('HEADING_TITLE', 'Categories'); } ?> Am I in the wrong place?? If you are lost too, no worries, it's not a big deal to just have that TEXT_MAIN hanging around on the page for awhile, I can always try to fix it sometime down the road as it doesn't seem to be affecting the operation of the site and I doubt that most people would even notice it was there...

No, you're in the right place. Just insert what I gave you (that sounds kinda naughty) as the first define statement and I'll find there that text is located and you can delete it.
