Organize shirt shop by design?

Is there a way to have a product design (e.g. an image on a shirt) be an option or attribute of the shirt, and still organize the OS Commerce shop by the designs? Let me give an example of what I'm trying to do...

In setting up a shirt shop, there will be several designs for users to choose from. Generally, all of these designs will be available on the same products -- e.g. Designs A, B, C, and D will all be available on a tee shirt (white or black), a ringer T (blue or green), and a long long sleeve tee (white or black).

But I want the shop to be organized by design, NOT by the product type -- for example, the buyer first clicks a design they like, then sees the shirts it's available on, then picks size, color, and quantity.

At this point it appears that I need to set up each Design/Shirt combo as its own separate product. Even though I have only 3 products -- tees, ringer tees, and long sleeve tees -- I'm going to have to set up 12 products: 4 designs times 3 shirt types. This will get very, very, repetitious in my options/attributes set up... Every time I add a new design, I'm going to have to add 3 products! And God forbid I ever expand the product line! :o Unless there's a way to have the Design be an option or attribute of the shirt, yet still be able to organize the shop by Design...? Any suggestions or best practices?

Thanks!

Sounds like you don't need categories just products.

Try installing this contrib to provide different attribute types.

Set up single products(the designs) and assign all the other information to attributes. Shirt type, colour, size etc.

There is also this contrib that allows you to assign images to the attributes. This might be helpful for the t-shirt images (as radio buttons?).

You might be able to configure this contrib to help with updating attributes as the customer chooses them.

I have only ever used the option type feature contrib so I am guessing at all the rest.

Best

Hi, Sheri,

Just now getting back to this. I'm making the code changes for AttributeSetsPlus_v1.01.

To re-state my goal: Have the user click a design image, then see what apparel the design is available on. Then they click or choose the apparel, then choose color, size, quantity, then pay.

I'll report back on my Attribute Sets install.

Got all the Attribute Sets Plus changes made! :D Going to start seeing how it works.

But... in your quote above, you are suggesting that my "products" be the designs, right? That would mean that "shirt" is an attribute of each design, such that the shopper clicks a design then chooses what kind of shirt (ringer T, sweatshirt, long sleeve T, etc.). But then... each shirt still has its own attributes (color, size) that the shopper must choose. So... Can an attribute have attributes?

Can anyone help with the problem quoted above? It's easy enough to set up ShirtType, Color, and Size as attributes for each Design product. But... in my case, each ShirtType option will have its own Color options... For example, Ringer Tee avail in Blue or Green, Regular Tee avail in White or Black, Sweatshirt avail in Grey or Blue. So... A single set of colors will not work. I need something like sub-options or nested attributes or something... Help! :'(

look up master products in the contribs section, it will probably be the best solution for you.
