Grand Total on the fly

I would like to create a shopping cart with computers for sale. how ever if a customer selects a pc, i would like to give them options to upgrade for example the monitor, or hard drive etc. if they select an upgrade i want oscommerce to display the grand total on the item page instead of the customer proceeding to checkout to get the final price. How do i do this?

You can use this code to display the total

$cart->show_total();

There is also a cart total contribution that displays a box on the page with the current cart total. I think it is called In Cart, or something like that.
