change number of products per page

How can I change the number of products displayed on the index page, and can they be returned side bu side instead of in a longlist downwards??

should be able to do it thru your admin>configration section.

 

not sure about the side by side bit.

You can do this in Admin->Configuration->Maximum Values->Search Results

The default is 20.
