I thought some of you might find this conversation that I just had with TM live support chat this morning umm.... interesting...

 

<me> I'm considering purchasing an osCommerce template, and I'm concerned about what might happen to the template if a required update comes out for the osCommerce script. Will updating the osCommerce script ruin the template that is running?

 

<REP> you cannot just upgrade your existing osc shop

 

<me> naturally since osc will come out with security patches and upgrades from time to time, i would need to be able to apply them. is there a way to do it without ruining the template?

<me> so an osc cart using a template monster template can never have the script itself upgraded even if there is an urgent security update?

 

<REP> right, our version is for 2.2 only

The funny thing is, the template I was considering is for 2.2!

 

I'm going to do some digging around this forum to find out if in fact it's true that I cannot apply patches/updates to an OSC cart that is using a TM template, but if anyone feels like posting that knowledge here then that would be most awesome of you, thanks!

Template Monster templates work by providing a file set of osCommerce files which they have edited to make their template work. One of the main problems is that they are still using the old version of osCommerce MS2, and not the updated version from last November or the latest update from early this month.

 

So if you install the latest version of MS2 and then import a Template Monster template you'll overwrite newer files with older ones, and reimport all of the bugs and security holes in the older version.

The files changes they make are not magical. The shop with the template installed can be updated like any oscommerce shop can be updated. You would have to do it file by file, not by copying files. And some of the code they use is not standard oscommerce code so you will have to account for that. Depending upon the template you order, they may have deleted sections of code that will prevent some contributions from installing correctly, although usually those are minor problems. If your shop already has changes made to it and you want to install a template over it, then you will need to compare the files one at a time to see what needs to be changed. That is typically around 40 files.
