New products not working properly

I have been told by my webhost that in order for new products to appear on the front page (and each of the main categories pages) the website is going through all products (3500+) and checking their creation dates before choosing which should appear - this in turn is making the site extrmemly slow to load.

 

I have put number of new products to display down to '0' to stop it for the moment, but how can I stop this from happening altogether?
