I had originally installed os commerce in a directory:www.domainame.com/store/ then in the process of trying to upgrade i re-installed it in a directory:www.domainname.com/store/catalog i'm thinking that had something to do with it...? anyone have an idea??

Was it protected the first time? To protect your admin area, you need to setup a .htaccess file. Search google on ".htaccess".
