problem with index.php when using admin tools

I need help with the admin tool that allows me to change the text on the main page. When I use the admin tools to change the text that reads "This is a default setup of the osCommerce project, products shown are for demonstrational purposes, any products purchased will not be delivered nor will the customer be billed. Any information seen on these products is to be treated as fictional." I refresh the page and get an error. Through my investigation I have found that the problem is when I click save the qualifing \ (backslashes) were taken out and are leaving the single quotes wide open. Am I doing something wrong or is this not a good way to change the text? Help is much appreciated on this topic.

HELP!!! I am having same problem. I edited from the OSC file instead of FTP---can anyone tell me how to correct this?
