Force display of all levels of the category tree

I'm trying to implement a category box that uses code along the lines of the slashdot menu ( http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/slashdot.htm ). This is displaying correctly, but it requires that levels 0 and 1 of the tree are always displayed no matter where you are. Is this possible??? I'm having quite a job sorting out where to modify stuff.

Hi Steve try Installing this,

I am having a few issues with controlling the width of it, got the same problem as you and just installed it,

let me know if you manage to get the CSS working proprerly
