How to add Indexes to Datavase Table etc ?????

Just browsing the forums and saw a thread about speeding up stores etc.

 

An experienced user recomended to someone to optimise their database by adding indexes to the database.

 

What is this, how does it spped the site up and why is nit not installed by default.

 

Is it a contrib and is it a necessary install?

 

So many questions :)
