Trying To Modify Category Listings With No Luck Help!

I want to change the look of the default category listing which comes with osCommerce, located on the homepage in the top left hand box, called categories, because it looks unclear and would be confusing to anybody trying to navigate the site. I wanted to remove the Category Arrows, maybe Add a Horizontal Rule and make more space between the categories, as well change the colour of the main categories and make the fonts bolder.

 

I read knowledge base but cant make heads or tails of the article. The problem is that when I go into catalog/includes/boxes/categories.php i dont know where or how to edit the codes. Are the codes quoted in knowledge base arleady present in the file? if so where because I cant find them. Or do i have to add the codes to the file? If so where to I have to put them?

 

For example in knowledge base they claim that this line of code $osC_CategoryTree->setParentString('', '->'); Places an arrow after each parent category name. I want to remove this arrow. How do I do that.

 

Its just confusing. If someone could tell me what code I need to use and where to put it I would be grateful. I pasted the code I am trying to edit below.

I have a question about Modifying the content in the Category Listings, I just want to remove one link. (If you would like to see what I mean, at this website http://www.tradingintl.com/cart/ I would like to get rid of the Auto Execution link.) But I don't understand this code, can anyone help me?
