Swapping images

I wanted to replace some product images with better ones, so I uploaded new images using ftp and named the images identically to the images being replaced. The images in the cart don't changed. I am curious why there is no change? Are actual images stored in the database? If not, why don't the images change?

Advice would be appreciated.

they should change, Murray, if you are not caching images and replaced them really in the same spot with exactly the same names (caps and all).

Thanks Monika. I just uploaded an image via ftp and it changed. However, if I change the image when I am making modifications via the admin and then checking the changes with the browser, I don't see the changes. The browser is set to refresh with every visit, so I should see them. Somehow the admin and the browser are showing the old images. It's puzzling.

Murray, ah no that will not work. Same name images are NOT updated via admin, you need to FTP them.

I just looked at this post one more time and noticed your last comment. Now I see why my images were not changing. I assumed the upload would work from within the admin. Now I know to upload via ftp.
