Hi All, I would like to move my osc site to a more reliable server with a new host. What i am after is some indication of what is involved before i take this task on.

The way i think i need to do this is:

1. Backup database locally

2. Backup all files locally

3. Transfer files to new web space

4. Change config with new database settings and server settings

5. Check to make sure site is functioning

6. If all ok, then upload database

Please can someone let me know if this is correct.

I then need to install an SSL - my new host has cpanel so this should be fairly easy, i hope.

Thanks

If you have cPanel on both servers -

My suggestion is to have the new Host move it for you (usually for free and very fast), then all you need to do is change the DNS to the new host and fix a few possible bugs like the global var issue

On the SSL - the host may also install it as a free service

Thanks for the reply. I don't have cpanel on my old host, this is part of the reason to move. Also the support is bad, by phone or email, very difficult to get hold of them.

Do i do what i posted previously.

My list......

1. Backup database locally

2. Backup all files locally

3. Transfer files to new web space

4. Create a database on new server

5. Change config with new database settings and server settings

6. Install your database (see other posts if you need help)

7. Debug the site (you will need to set the config settings to the IP address)

8. Switch the config back to your domain name

9. Switch the DNS to point to the new host

10. After 3 hours to 3 days you will be able to access the new site

(I suggest you put a small change on the front page of the new site, then when it turns on you will know which server you are looking at)

11. While waiting order your ssl cert and install

More info:

another possible error area is the .htaccess file
